Last summer, we added some roses to our yard since I have a very hard time resisting anything that is ruffly, pretty and lovely smelling!  These roses were in addition to some Knockout Roses and a few David Austin roses that I had planted the year before.

I currently have a love/hate relationship with the roses.  The love comes into play anytime I catch a glimpse of the beautiful flowers that adorn the bushes.  The hate is caused by having lost one to Rosette disease and black spot fungus invading some of the bushes.  Oh, and did I mention that I have absolutely no idea what I am doing when it comes to proper rose care?  But every time I think that I'm completely done with roses, they bloom and I fall in love all over again!

Several summers ago, we added a small shed to the yard.  I envisioned a climbing rose bush on the shed, but I never could have expected it to do as well as this New Dawn.  It was just planted last summer!

If anyone has rose wisdom to share please do so!

The Hammock

Last Father's Day, I gave Bryce a really lovely hammock and not until this past weekend did we get around to putting it up!  Part of the problem was that we don't really have an ideal spot in the yard to put the hammock.  We knew that unless it was fairly shaded it wouldn't get used too often, but we only have one tree that is large enough to hold a hammock.  In order to use that tree a post needed to be cemented in to attach the other end of the hammock too.  Which is exactly what we (meaning Bryce) did.  It looks great where it ended up and it's very relaxing!

I found that it is the perfect spot to watch some baseball playing...

or gaze at the tree canopy!

Our only problem is that the hammock has stretched and now the occupants bottom is merely inches from the ground!  So we will either have to figure out a fix or just live with it!

Memorial Day

Happy Memorial Day everyone!  Is anyone else stunned that it's already time to pull out pool towels and swimsuits?

We've had such a great couple of days, with a perfect balance of work and play.  Our weekend included working in the yard, ice cream, a sleepover (that's pretty rare for us), dinner with friends, an outdoor movie night with friends, a Memorial Day parade and fun at the pool.  It was all pretty great.

Portrait of a House

Last fall, the children's school held an auction to help raise money for the PTO.  At the auction I bid on, and won, a watercolor painting of our house!  I thought it was the perfect way to celebrate being done with the addition/renovations.

Just last week I received the finished project, and I couldn't be happier with the results.  I think the artist did an absolutely beautiful job.  Bryce and I think it looks better than our actual house (it helps that she combined blooming seasons!).

We hung the picture in the mudroom bathroom, and it adds a colorful touch that was lacking in there!

Mouse Shoes

Last week my friend, Cara, had on a most darling pair of shoes that reminded me of these Marc Jacobs mouse shoes.  When I asked her where she got them I was astounded to find out that she purchased them at a dollar store!  Of course, I made my way over and picked up a pair for $3!

Yesterday, for various and a-sundry reasons, I didn't have a great day.  It was a rainy day, and I wore my new mouse shoes (they are plastic).  I found that every time I looked down at them, they made me smile -which was a definite mood lifter and well worth $3!

Favorite Things #20

I've only had this BKR water bottle for a week but it's already at the top of my favorites list.  I have a real aversion to plastic water bottles- it makes me truly sad to think about the tons of plastic used everyday to deliver water to us!  I've had and used plastic and aluminum water bottles, but what I love about this bottle is that it is glass!  It feels great drinking out of glass (very civilized!) and the water doesn't taste funny.  The silicone sleeve helps to protect the glass in case of breakage - I've already dropped mine on the driveway and it was fine.  Of course, it's a huge bonus that the bottle is downright pretty.

Outdoor Portrait

Several years ago, I ripped out an article in Country Living Magazine recommending using a vinyl outdoor banner, meant for advertising, for an outdoor portrait.  I wanted a fun, outdoorsy picture of the children above our outdoor fireplace, so I used a picture that I took in Hilton Head of the children jumping into the pool.  It's fun and bright, and I love how it turned out!  Megaprint made it super easy to order the banner and I love that it didn't break the bank!

Dinner and a Movie- The Gnome Mobile

Friday, for family night, we had an evening of fun food and a cute movie.  I love matching our food to whatever movie we are watching for our dinner and movie nights.  It's a creative outlet for me and fun for the children, so it is a win-win!  We watched an old Disney classic, The Gnome Mobile (I chose the food before the movie!).  Therefore, I made dinner in the form of various toadstools.

We had mozzarella, tomato and feta cheese toadstool appetizers.

We also had a mixed salad with toadstool radishes.

Our main course was a toadstool pizza!

For dessert an upside down ice cream cone evoked a gnomes hat!

This movie could not have been any more different from movies made for children today, but it delighted the children.  They laughed... a lot!

P.S.  Here's our last dinner and a movie!

Mother's Day 2012

Happy Mother's Day friends!  We had a lovely day that included breakfast in bed, a delicious lunch and dinner with my Mom (oh, and a family trip to Lowes!).  I'm extremely thankful for the support, guidance and inspiration of all the Moms that surround me- my own Mom, my mother-in-law, my sister, sister-in-law and my dear friends. This journey of being a Mom wouldn't be the same without them!  Thank you.

we said bye to our friend Jack.  He stayed with us while on a business trip and it was so great to have him in our home!

I watched as the children twirled around a May Pole at school.

I'm thankful that if we are going to have a broken bone, it's only a pinky finger (and yes, that's the best picture I could get of him!)!

the peonies are opening and, as always, I'm struck at how beautiful they are.

I'm sad that one of my roses has a fatal disease, but I'm super excited that one of my climbing roses is blooming, happy and smells divine!

The Screened Porch

The screened in porch has slowly been evolving into the space that I envisioned it to be!  We've had a fair amount of opportunities to enjoy it this spring and it has been wonderful.

When I first ordered the whicker furniture for the porch I was worried that it would feel too tight.  Then when the furniture arrived I was even more worried that it was too tight and I had made a huge mistake.  I kept wondering why it didn't fit quite the way I had placed it (especially since I had tested it out with newspaper) and then it hit me.  I forgot to factor in the fireplace hearth.  Oops.  Not once did I consider that we had to have a rather deep hearth due to code.  Therefore, the love-seats could not be pushed as far into the corner as I would have liked.  So we made do.  One sofa covers up a door a little more than I would like but it's turned out to be fine.  And the sofas?  They are so comfortable.  Naps will be taken, books will be read and chatting will be done- it's all going to be fine.

I absolutely love and adore the table that sits in between the love-seats and in front of the fireplace.  Kathleen and I found it at an antique store and both loved it right away.  She couldn't take it home on the plane with her, so I got it.  She might still be a little bitter.  Isn't it fabulous?

We brought out a cabinet that had been sitting in our basement.  The base holds stereo equipment and the top holds games, blankets and serving pieces to use on the porch.

All in all, we are thrilled with our porch and are anxious to really start breaking it in!

Grace in Don Quixote

On Saturday, Grace performed in Don Quixote.  I love that her ballet studio puts on an actual ballet instead of a recital.  They truly do a beautiful job and it's a pleasure to go and watch the students dance.  We are so proud of Grace and the hard work she put into her performance!  We think she was amazing.
