Grace is 19

Grace is 19 today.  That means that we've had 19 years of her in our lives and I"m so thankful for every single day.  We never expected her to be home with us this year as she should be off at college learning and growing away from home.  But, of course, Covid changed that for her.  I can't explain how very worried I am for our young people as they've been asked to shoulder a burden that will shape who they are for years to come.  We recognize that this time is a gift for us but I do pray that she can have a relatively normal college experience in years to come.  Here's our top 10 things about Grace that we find interesting and love about her.

1.  She's simply a good person and she cares about doing the right thing.

2.  Watching the West Wing is her comfort show and organizing things is her comfort activity.

3.  She's brave.  Even though she struggles with perhaps caring a bit too much what others think, she makes brave choices for her life (Scotland... I'm looking at you).

4.  She is obsessed with skin care.  I've never met anyone who takes such good care of their skin as Grace does.  My bet is that will pay off in future years.  (Also, I think she could be a beauty editor someday)

5.  She still doesn't love to drive, she does like to bake and cook, and she did not care for the dorm food in Scotland.

6.  Since she's been away at college a whopping four months, she's the same but different.  She is a bit sillier with us, a bit more carefree and she definitely spends more time with us downstairs instead of locked away in her room.  She's still a worrier though.

7. In those four months, she met a boy she really liked and thought maybe it would turn into something.  But then he made some choices she wasn't willing to be ok with and so she moved on without any drama.  I'm really proud of her for having that sort of self respect and knowledge about what she's willing to live with.

8.  She's been super disappointed about not having face to face instruction.  She loves getting to know her teachers and gets a lot of satisfaction from forming a relationship with them.  Online learning has made that next to impossible.

9.  Grace is type A through and through.  She worries about things and wants to be sure they are done in a timely and thorough manner.  She checks every box, packs at least a week in advance, makes lists of all sorts and likes to know what's coming.

10.  She has loves her cat, Coco, in a profound way.  Literally, they speak their own language and Coco does whatever Grace tells her too.  Also, she has an abnormal amount of photos of Coco on her phone.

Valentine's Day

While this year has been different in almost every single way, our Valentine's Day was actually much like all of our Valentine's Days, celebrated at home and with each other.

We started off the day with homemade pop tarts!

As you know, I believe in celebrating every chance we get and so we dressed up our table in front of the fire and had a "fancy" dinner of filet, salad with beet hearts, and brussel sprouts in my favorite heart baker.

Grace also made a charcuterie board and Bryce made delicious Rose Cocktails.

For dessert, we had a chocolate cake with buttercream roses (that were meant to be pale pink!).

Snow!

We recently got a whopper of a snowstorm!  It snowed for almost three days, sometimes heavy, sometimes light and sometimes even sleet.  We stayed inside and enjoyed the fire for most of the first day, and the second day we got outside to shovel and play!  We even took a small picnic over the creek.  The snow has stuck around so far because we are having chilly temps, and I have to admit that I like having it on the ground. It makes it less dreary and brown!  Here are some pictures...

Everyone had to pitch in to shovel!

The ducks don't mind the snow but the chickens won't even leave their coop!

The orchard looks lovely with a blanket of snow.

In the middle of the storm, Bryce and I went on a hike through the woods.

We took hot chocolate and snacks over the creek to sled and even ski.  I made lavender marshmallows as a treat.
