Grace's Room

Grace's room has been "done" for a while now, but I haven't shared because I kept thinking that we would straighten up her shelves before we took pictures.  However, I've realized that she has them the way she wants them and that they change on an almost weekly basis so why not capture them just how she has them.  And though I did pick up a few pieces of clothing off the floor, straighten up her assortment of items on her bedside table and fluff out her duvet, this is her room pretty much as it is.

She really loves the bedside table we found at a local shop.  I was concerned that it didn't have a drawer, but I think in the end it's worked out really, really well!  The bottom shelf is perfect for stacks of books and the top is nice and wide.  The lamp is one we used in our living room in our old house.  I pulled it out from the basement and painted it the same color as the walls and the linen shade works perfectly with her duvet cover.

Grace is in love with having a double bed (as we enter the tween/teen years she does enjoy sleeping in more and more!).  I chose not to get pillow shams since they would inevitably get thrown on the floor and stay there!  It looks a little unfinished but not enough to bother me and it certainly doesn't bother Grace!  At least this way we get closer to having a made up bed each morning!

The dresser we bought Grace and the bulletin board we made are going strong and have been a perfect fit.

We love Grace's new acrylic desk chair.  I think it helps to give the room a little edge away from being too traditional for a tween/teen, and I believe it will work all the way through school as she gets older and older!  Also, the wool rug has worked out beautifully!

As I mentioned, Grace's desk is ever evolving and she uses it every single day to do homework, craft projects, write and dream.  She changes out little vignettes on her window sill all the time!  Recently, she cleaned up her desk and moved a lot of stuff away and I actually missed seeing her display(s).  It always gives me a clue as to what she is thinking about and enjoying (they showed up again pretty quickly).

Grace is very fortunate that her room is a very generous size so she is able to fit a double bed, vanity, dresser and bookshelves/desk combination!

P.S.  Look at this post I did years ago about Grace's room!  She was so little!

In 2 Weeks...

My in-laws are leaving today after a two week visit.  I can honestly say that this has been the busiest two weeks in my recent memory- both with projects we've taken on because they were here and the general business of life!

Here's a rundown of what's been happening around here...

a vegetable/cutting garden was created where there was grass
drawers have been fitted with custom bread and vegetable inserts
lots of plants have been planted along with mulch being spread
baseball games have been attended, even in the pouring rain
Al's birthday was celebrated
ballet performances were watched and observations were made in class
plumbing work was accomplished
plants were pruned
two sets of porch stairs were replaced
our town's street fair was walked and enjoyed
day trips were made to find possible fences for the vegetable garden
dinner parties (where the children stayed with their Grandparents) and cookouts were enjoyed
an open pantry was created with marble shelves and simple brackets
walks to school were enjoyed with Al and Marilyn instead of Dad

We so appreciate all the ways that Al and Marilyn help make our my crazy ideas come to life and the time they spend with the children is invaluable!

Memorial Day Cupcakes

I hope everyone had a lovely Memorial Day!  We had a perfect day that included a parade, pool, friends, family, burgers and our first movie on the lawn for the season!  For the cookout we attended, we brought cupcakes with little licorice flags on top.  I found that I was quite busy working in the garden on Sunday evening and so Grace made the cupcakes for me and they turned out delicious!

It was a group effort decorating them as Marilyn cut the licorice strings, I placed them and Grace piped on the dots!

Hall of Fame and Baltimore

Several weeks ago, we traveled to Baltimore to support and celebrate with our dear friend, Tim, as he was inducted into the Lacrosse Hall of Fame at his alma mater, Loyola.  It was a really special day (and a really big deal!) and I so enjoyed watching my first Lacrosse game!  We are so proud of Tim and were thrilled to be a small part of his day!

After the game and a celebratory gathering, we headed to the inner harbor to explore for a bit.  There we walked around, Grace found the coolest Barnes and Noble's she's ever seen, and a very cool playground was explored.  We look forward to visiting again!

Favorite Things #42

These linen bowl covers are the perfect example of having something useful and beautiful in your home.  The other evening I prepped all of dinner since I knew that I would be getting home very late and it would be vastly easier for Bryce if everything was all set to go.  I chopped and sliced all the ingredients and left them in bowls ready to be put together.  I covered each bowl in one of my linen bowl covers which makes it so much easier than pulling out plastic wrap or tin foil.  It's also less wasteful so I say that makes it a win all the way around!

Lilacs

I love this time of year where one season of blooming flowers flows into the next (I think this is a great reminder of what's in bloom).  As always, our lilac season felt very short but I think we made the most of it with arrangements, cocktails and syrups!

I made a lilac simple syrup that we've used in a few cocktails and spritzers.  I've also used it in my coffee!  I didn't love the margarita, it was too citrusy, but it was pretty!

I also made a batch of lilac sugar which can also be used in any number of different dishes.

Sleeping Beauty

Grace's ballet school does not have a recital each year, but rather they perform a ballet with the opportunity for students to participate if they wish.  On Saturday, Grace performed in the ballet, Sleeping Beauty!  She was wonderful, as was the entire production.  The skill and talent these young dancers display blows me away every single year.  Grace was lucky enough this year to have 2 (out of three) sets of Grandparents present to watch the performance.  Here are some snapshots of the day...

Wednesdays

I love Wednesdays.  It's our family day in the middle of the week.  The day where the children get to reconnect with each other, the garden and us too.  No baseball games or ballet classes just the entire afternoon stretched out in front of us.  I love Wednesdays.

*Pictures from 2 Wednesdays ago- blurry due to the fact I was cozy inside while they played outside in the pouring rain!
