Billings and Great Falls (Days 1 and 2)

When we first started contemplating taking an RV trip this summer we imagined driving cross country, but lack of time for planning and lack of an actual RV to drive (most companies don't rent for more than a few weeks) swiftly changed our plan to a shorter trip.  In the end, we ended up using the company Tracks and Trails to help us plan our trip and it ended up to be a great move for our first RV vacation.  They made all the reservations and provided us with a detailed itinerary for each of the 15 days we traveled.  However, there was still a lot of flexibility with how we spent our time.

We flew to Billings, Montana and spent the night there in a small hotel.  We arrived early and therefore had the day to explore the city.

We toured the Moss Mansion which was the home of a prominent family in Billings and then went and hiked by and played in the Yellowstone River.

Bright and early the next morning, we went to pick up the RV.  After getting a short orientation we headed out... to the Wal-Mart superstore to get groceries!  We then drove to Great Falls for the evening where we stayed at a KOA campground for the night.  It was here that Harris tried, and failed, to eat the largest pancake known to man - it even had delicious Huckleberry Sauce!

The next morning, before we headed to Glacier National Park, we stopped by the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center to learn more about their monumental expedition.  Now, I certainly learned about Lewis and Clark in school, but I never really considered exactly what a true feat their journey was!  The center was an excellant place to learn about these men (and one woman!) and their accomplishments.  It was also pretty neat to gaze over the Missouri River.

After lunch, we drove out of Billings and toward Glacier National Park!

  1. Amazing how simple it can be to communicate with people and have them understand a certain topic, you made my day.

  2. This is awesome! We took a road trip (in our car) this summer, too, but I have always wanted to rent an RV... Thank you for the tips! Looks like y'all had a great trip! :)

  3. That pancake is gynormous! You really began experiencing neat things right at the start. We have been in several states that were part of the Lewis and Clark expedition and learn more in each place. That was very clever of you to take the multipurpose steamer. One would think you had done this before!

  4. I love the idea of flying and then driving...I'm not sure that would work as well for my LARGE crew...but it's brilliant!!! Sounds like a perfect first day!
