Goal Attained!!

Back in the beginning of March we (meaning Grace, Bryce and I) set a goal for Grace. If she could stop sucking her thumb she could get a kitten. The deal was that she had to go for 40 days without sucking her thumb and if she sucked her thumb she had to start back at day one. At the end of day 40 we would start looking for a new kitten to bring home.

Grace has desperately wanted a kitten for a long time now and, to be perfectly honest, I knew that the only thing (besides dental intervention) that would motivate her to stop thumb sucking would have to be something rather large. I'm not sure if it's considered bad parenting to bribe a child this way or not, but I do know that she hit day 40 today and she has learned that it pays to work toward a goal. She has also learned that it's not easy and failure along the way can be frustrating and disheartening. But it doesn't mean that you won't ever reach your goal, you simply continue trying. (The worst was the time she made it to day 24 and had to start all over!)

We took the children out for ice cream tonight to celebrate her success and as we walked into the shop she told me that she was proud of herself and that she felt that she had really worked hard.  I think that that is the best lesson she could have learned and am very proud of her too!

  2. Yay! Great parenting tip! Goal-setting and rewards for meeting those goals is a real-life lesson, not bribery! I'm proud of her! We're attempting to get rid of the pacifier before Annika turns two. Too bad she's not quite old enough to get the setting goals idea!
